Maldives el nino. El nino l ninjo. Having grown up in the maldives beybe remembers a time when the reefs were thriving. If they stay above 32c for any length of time there is severe coral bleaching as happened in 1998.
The food chain on all coral islands consists mainly of 3 groups. In a nutshell el nino was destructive and devastating during the late 90s we all have no doubt over that. Sadly in 2014 the el nino climate cycle triggered the worst coral bleaching events on record.
The hunters sharks and other predatory fishes the hunted. The reefs were affected again in 2016 by el nino. Between 1 to 3 meters of depthel nino hits maldives 4 months agohere we had few bleached coral and it is not completely dead toosome patches in table corals and it looks like its growing back nowbut lots of shallow growing sea anemone became white and now okay too.
I cant find anything about possible impact on maldives weather. El nino mainly affects sea temps in the maldives. Since this is expected to be a big el nino year does anyone know how the el nino will affect the maldives.
More than 60 of coral in reefs in the maldives has been hit by. Articles say that south america experiences more rain and indonesiaaustralia more likely to have drought. Reading further some episodes of coral bleaching again happened in 2002 2005 and 2010 but the maldives were largly unaffected by these events and not sure why.
Answer 1 of 8. My wife and i are considering a trip to the maldives this year and are considering december or january or alternately april. El ninjo is generally named as a main cause by coral bleaching on the maldives but the two other factors overfishing and sediments also have contributed to it for certain special the fishing.
The el nino has now weakened and temperatures are expected to return to normal in the next few weeks.
